The Real Deal:

Physique 57, which has been all the rage in New York City, has finally made its way out West!  The workout has inspired somewhat of a cult following, and celeberities such as Kelly Ripa swear by it as part of their regular fitness regimen.  While the concept is similar to other barre workouts, Physique 57 places a greater emphasis on maintaining a higher heart rate level: just when you think you can’t possibly sweat any more, the instructors throw in a set of push-ups to keep your heart pumping and lungs burning.  It’s not quite what you would expect from a ballet-esque workout! You have the opportunity to use larger weight sizes if you choose and there are a lot of moves that are unique only to Physique 57.  From traditional barre leg exercises, to hard core abdominal training and floor work, Physique 57 offers a lot of variety.  The music gives off a fun and carefree vibe, and all of the instructors are encouraging…even if you can’t quite slide down into perfect splits like they can! Physique 57 has also been able to expand their success across the country with their line of DVDs.  The DVDs don’t offer quite the same intensity level of the classes…but they sure get close!  When you order the DVD series, you get three different workouts ranging from 30 minutes to 57 minutes and they are absolutely a great substitute if you don’t have the time or the money to make it into the Beverly Hills studio!

Know Before You Go:

Having started out as a devoted follower of the Physique 57 DVDs, I figured that during my first class, I would feel like an old pro!  I was wrong.  While the DVDs prepared me somewhat for what to expect out of the workout…the notch was turned up several levels in the studio.  I got to test out a bunch of new moves that only reinforced my love for this incredible workout.  Not only was I fatigued from the leg lifts and ball squeezing sessions at the bar…but the push-up intervals thrown in throughout the class really helped keep me out of breath.  The ab exercises were so varied…it was obvious that I was challenging each area of my core.  I was immediately exhausted after my first class there, and then sore for several days after (A sign of a really good workout!). The studio has a lot of pluses: it’s in a great location with convenient parking, all instructors are friendly and eager to be teaching the workout in LA, it’s very clean, provides towels, and has a nice, but small, locker room to change in.  My only wish is that Physique 57’s prices were a bit more affordable.  I would recommend at least trying out the studio experience once (maybe even making it a once a month splurge) and then springing for the DVDs to challenge yourself to this workout at home smile

I heard that Physique 57 was coming to Beverly Hills in May and was so excited!!!  There had been a ton of buzz about this amazing workout and a few friends told me that it had changed their entire body.  I took my very first class on Wednesday….and my outer thighs were still sore on Saturday!!!  I have to be honest, I LOVE cardio, but this really kicked my butt, and thighs and abs and…..   The class truly hits all the hard to get spots like your outer thigh and triceps.  I took the beginner course, they also offer an open (all level) class.  The class began with a series of arm movements using 3 and 5 pound weights, then we did a lot of leg and butt work…and you can’t forget the dreaded abs.  The movements seem so simple and basic, but even the smallest lift and tuck can be very challenging.  That being said, this workout is for all levels of fitness, there always modifications and you need to remember to go at your own pace.  ENJOY!!!
