The Real Deal:

The Santa Monica Swim Center is a part of Santa Monica City College’s campus and is open to the public.  The facilities are gorgeous and expansive with two pools offering different depths.  Both pools are available for lap swimming, with the Fitness pool converting from Short Course to Long Course depending on the time of day, and the Splash pool offering shallower depths.  The pools are both heated, but the Splash pool runs a bit warmer and is used more by children and lap swimmers that prefer 3-4 foot depths.  The Swim Center also offers a variety of programs ranging from adult and child swim lessons, to aqua aerobics and competitive swim teams.  There are on-site shower facilities as well as an upper deck area that is frequented by sun-bathers taking advantage of a post-swim nap or reading a book. The pool is open for lap swimming from 5:30am-8:30pm Monday-Thursday, 5:30am-7:00pm on Friday, 7:00am-7:00pm on Saturday, 8:00am-7:00pm on Sunday, and there are always lifeguards on duty.

The Swim Center is one of my favorite finds on the Westside.  I love swimming outdoors and was lucky to happen upon a pool that’s clean, well-maintained and offers plenty of lanes for lap swimming all throughout the day. Regardless of whether you live in Santa Monica (and can therefore take advantage of the reduced prices) or not, purchasing a swim pass is definitely the way to go since you also get a seasonal parking pass good for the lot just adjacent to the pool.  The Southern California Aquatics Masters team uses these pool facilities and is a great program to take advantage of if you have ever been a competitive swimmer.  The ability levels are extremely varied (from seasoned ex-Olympians to more elderly swimmers who use fins for assistance) and the environment is very welcoming. The Masters group holds workouts every day of the week, morning and evening, and you can attend as many workouts as you want with a monthly membership.  The coaches are awesome and the workouts are fantastic…I definitely recommend checking it out!  You can try your first workout for free by filling out the form here: https://www.clubassistant.com/club/tw.cfm?c=1
