The Real Deal:

Your Neighborhood Studio is truly that…a place where you feel welcome and at home in a cozy group atmosphere.  The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it location is on a small side street bordering Smashbox Studios in Culver City.  While parking is hard to find, the perfect class for you is much easier to come by with their wide selection of options.  Choices range from Zumba and Ballet to Hip Hop and Booiaka, as well as our recent obsession…Broadway (Mondays at 9pm and Sundays at 11:30am).  There simply isn’t a more perfect class for those of us who love the arts and dream about performing those amazing numbers from our favorite Broadway hits.  The best part is…you don’t have to be a “dancer.”  The class is for all levels and more emphasis is placed on enjoying the movements and less on perfecting the steps.  The instructor, JD, is talented, upbeat, positive and encouraging, and puts his own personal flair into each dance he teaches.  JD starts out by giving you a little background on the show and the dance number you’ll be performing and motivates you to “get into character” and really feel the emotion in the music.  Have no fear dance newbies…the class is paced very well and the routine is broken up so you can learn a little bit at a time.  Trust us, you won’t be able to contain the giant grin that’s sure to spread over your face while performing the entire number all out at the end of class.  We are so excited to have found this one of a kind dance studio and can’t wait to try out some other classes.  Stay tuned for more reviews and in the meantime, join us on Monday nights at YNS!

Know Before You Go:

  • Most classes are done either barefoot, in tennis shoes, or dance shoes (if you have them).  Check the class schedule for specific footwear instructions.
  • Parking is a little hard to find, but look for open street parking or meters on Hayden Ave and cross street Rodeo.
  • The studio does not have a very well marked sign.  Look for double glass doors that lead into what looks like a giant warehouse/garage building.
  • There are locker and shower facilities on site.
  • Sign up on the website to get 50% off your first class!
  • Don’t be scared to try a class if you’ve never danced before!  Prior experience is NOT necessary smile

Julie says:

As a self-proclaimed musical theatre geek, it’s hard for me to even put into words how happy this class makes me feel!  Monday nights at YNS are now a weekly tradition for my sister-in-law (also a major Broadway fan) and me, and we couldn’t possibly be any more giddy and energized after this class. It’s not easy to find a dance studio in LA that caters to non-professionals AND gives rookies the chance to feel like they are preparing for opening night at the Pantages.  So far, we’ve had the opportunity to learn dances from Legally Blonde, the Pajama Game, Bye Bye Birdie, and even a modern lyrical jazz piece just for fun.  This class is ALL about fun and feeling as if you’re playing the part of a character from the show.  The instructor, JD, is one of the most bubbly and enthusiastic people I’ve ever met and he makes every student feel comfortable and confident.  The class only runs for one hour…but I promise you’ll want to keep dancing all night.  You’ve got to give this class a try!
